Principal’s Report - 18 April 2008

I would like to congratulate Darryn Kruse for being shortlisted for the most prestigious teaching award in Victorian Education, the Lindsay Thompson fellowship. Darryn is one of the three finalists and we will find out at an awards ceremony on May 17 whether he is the overall winner.

Darryn has been nominated for the award for leading a process of curriculum renewal adding problem-based and project-based elements to the curriculum. This has led to more challenging and engaging personal learning experiences for students. Darryn has been able to effectively communicate his core message that each student can improve in a range of situations. Parents on a regular basis praise Darryn's capacity to inspire, influence and direct their children.
Darryn's work at the school has left a lasting legacy of successful and engaging curriculum programs and changed teaching practice. This has been one significant factor in raising student learning outcomes and he is called upon by many other schools to work with them on staff professional development activities.

School Athletics

These were held on Wednesday of this week and were a tremendous success with lots of participants in events and a true carnival atmosphere. Congratulations to Chris Millard and the staff for their work and to RED team for their winning performance.

Stop Work

There is a scheduled stop work next Wednesday morning, April 23. Families will be advised of arrangements via a special notice on Monday

Principal’s Report - 11 April 2008

Ministerial Reception

On Tuesday evening I was invited to a ministerial reception celebrating the work of the Leading Schools Fund (L.S.F.) in Victorian schools at Docklands. Fitzroy High School was one of the first schools to receive funding under this program and we were featured in a DVD presentation highlighting successful initiatives developed through the L.S.F.

Our project was based in the areas of personalisation and teacher effectiveness. I was particularly proud at one point in the film where one of our students stated ‘…school… that’s the reason I get up in the morning…’. The funding we received through this program has now finished but many of the things that we learnt are embedded in our ongoing activities. You will be able to view the film in the main foyer of the school from the middle of next week.

School Review

As I have advised previously we are undertaking a major school review this year. We will be seeking input from our parent community and will be inviting a randomly selected group of parents to meet with the reviewer on the night of May 15. Staff have already been involved in activities looking at school data and considering questions about their professional performance.

An important part of the review is to consider how we have gone in the past, more importantly we need to set goals and targets for the future.

The review undertakes an evaluation of performance in three student outcome areas:

1. Student learning

2. Student pathways and transition

  • Grade 6 to Year 7
  • Year 9 to post compulsory

3. Student engagement and wellbeing

Below are some key dates related to the review:

7 April

  • Briefing to staff on review
  • Initial staff responses to key questions

7 May

  • Focus group: Health Promoting Schools sub-committee

15 May

  • School Self-evaluation due

21 May

  • Review Day
  • Presentation to staff
  • Presentation to school council
  • Submission of report

Building Works

The work has been completed in the gymnasium and will be available for student use next week. The tender for the main works closes next Thursday and we would hope to have builders on site next month.

Industrial Action

I have been informed by the Australian Education Union (A.E.U.) of a proposed half day stop work on Wednesday April 23. As a consequence most students will not be required at school until the start of lunchtime at 12:30pm. I will provide exact details to families before the stop work.

Curriculum Days

Due to the stop work we will not be holding our planned curriculum day on April 23. The planned curriculum day on Thursday, April 24 will proceed with April 25 being the ANZAC Day public holiday. Students will not be required at school on either of these days.

Maths

Click on the link below to access some advice regarding Maths software from Consumer Affairs Victoria. At times it does help students to receive extra tuition but I would recommend that you ask for advice from your child’s advisory or Mathematics teacher before doing so.

Senior School - Parent teacher interviews

3-Way conferences are taking place on Thursday 17th April from 3:30pm until 8:00pm. This is an opportunity for parents and students to discuss academic progress with individual subject teachers. Interview forms were distributed to students earlier in the week and interviews can be made by contacting subject teachers through students, directly through phone or email.
