Romeo and Juliet

Last Thursday evening Indigo and Sapphire students, staff and parents met in the Botanical Gardens to enjoy the Australian Shakespeare Company's production of Romeo and Juliet. The wet weather (just!) stayed away for the outdoor performance of the bard's timeless tale of two star cross'd lovers, given a modern twist by its young cast.

Here is an edited extract of Lily Ts' review:

“A definite highlight was the acting: Glenn Van Oosterom was an exuberant, playful Romeo and Kylie Parker's young and innocent Juliet was perfect at times, but she struggled to convey Juliet's sorrow and turmoil. The support characters were a delight, with Adrian Dart perfect as the lusty Mercutio and Terri Brabon giving an hilarious performance as the nurse.
The only failing would be the friar, who had an accent that one reviewer described as 'Igor on Valium'. But that aside, all actors put on a great performance expressing their character's emotions quite well and made the complex language seem a breeze. The fight scenes were as convincing and exciting as they could get out of a live performance, which made a refreshing change to the fully edited brawls in the modern on-screen versions.
The only part that had me yawning was the dance routine in the masked ball scene: it was good fun for the first few minutes, but the aimless and weakly co-ordinated piece seemed to go on for MUCH longer than needed.
The Royal Botanic Gardens complemented the play perfectly, and the laidback mood of an outdoor performance was very much enjoyed by the audience, who sat in silence on their picnic rugs with the only sound the crunching of food and the far off sounds of the city."

We all agreed that it was well worth enduring the chilly evening for the opportunity to experience Shakespeare in the Gardens.

Year 7 camp - 20, 21, 22 February

Eighty excited year seven students set off last Wednesday for the Lady Northcote camp. Despite some concerns about the weather all began the first of their rotations that afternoon. Over the three days all students got to experience high ropes, yabbying, flying fox, giant swing, mountain biking, survivor challenge and canoeing. On first night there was a reflector trail walk and the second night a red faces performance.

I would like to congratulate all students and staff for making the camp a great success. The feedback from the students has been very positive, and it was great to see them all socialising, giving every activity their best effort and working together so well. On return from camp I overheard a student commenting that if the aim of the camp was to give students an opportunity to get to know more students then we definitely achieved our goal.
