Archive Career NewsNovember - December 2007Worlds of Work - 22 NovemberOur students who participated in Worlds of Work returned to the City Centre last week to hear and meet Dan Adams - Make Poverty History Concert Organiser. They have also been invited to be part of the evaluation of the program, in conjunction with the corporate and NGO participants. I spoke at an Education Foundation function last night and shared a couple of the stories of the experiences of our students at the Worlds of Work. Many of the corporate participants were deeply impressed and moved by the impact the program has had on the participating students. The program is three-days of science, engineering and technology activities for students in Year 10 in 2008. Sandra Careers Counsellor A Career in Football Administration - 15 NovemberA group of interested Scarlet and jet students were treated to a talk given by Tim Harrington, Football Administrator for the Kangaroos, and local community member. He regaled us with interesting stories about his own AFL playing and assistant coaching experience as well as his current role with the Kangaroos. He talked about the tenuous lifespan an AFL player, where the average playing career with the AFL lasts 3 to 4 years. The insight he provided to the world of AFL was fascinating. The Kangaroos teach its players life skills, including financial management, supermarket shopping and cooking skills. Sandra Work Skills Information Session postponed - 1 NovemberIn addition to Building Construction Stream A and B and Furnishings, the Inner Melbourne VE&T Cluster (IMVC) have added a number of other programs to the suite, including GirlSpace 2008 – WorkSkills for Today’s Girl, and Interior Decoration and Design Pathways. To avoid any confusion IMVC have decided to postpone the information session, originally planned for Tuesday 27th November, until early Term 1 2008. Applications for GirlSpace and Interior Decoration are due 15th November 2007. Explore a career in the Video Games IndustryThe Australian video games industry generates an estimated $1billion dollars per annum, currently employs over 8000 people and is expected to double in the next few years. Many graduates are currently recruited from overseas due to a skills shortage in Australia. The eGames and Entertainment Expo is being staged at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre from 16-18 November and is the largest video games expo in Australia. The expo features a specific education and developers section where students can talk to course advisors and developers first hand. The expo also features the major console vendors including Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo and all the latest release game titles and accessories and PC platform games. There will also be competition play demonstrations and non-stop action with keynotes and presentations on the main stage at the expo. Entry is about $20.00 per head. Work Experience 2008I am continually encouraged by the conversations I am having in regards to the organisation of Work Experience for 2008. A few tips: Keep a record of who you contacted and when. Don’t give up. Make use of your network of family and friends for contacts. Work Skills - Interior Decoration and Design - 1 NovemberThe aim of the Work Skills Interior Decoration and Design program (Pathways 2008), offered by IMVC in conjunction with Holmesglen Institute of TAFE, is to give students an insight into the training required to achieve an Interior Decoration and Design qualification. It will provide an exciting and safe learning environment where students can experience work activities from the Interior Decoration and Design industries. During this program, students will develop knowledge and skills to work in this exciting professional industry. During the course of the program students will work on several interiors for both domestic and commercial applications. The course is made up of both theory and practical modules. Students will undertake accredited training.
