Instrumental Music Concert - June 2009

How many people can you fit into the music room? What is the legal limit for guitarists in a guitar ensemble? These questions and more were answered on Tuesday night when an unexpected, large and loving audience turned out to enjoy performances from students in the FHS Instrumental Program.

First up, Rachel presented string players from the year 7 introductory program. Well done to Serey and Marina who were brave enough to play solos, and also to Josh and Alister who joined them to play Click Go The Shears. Next up Leah played ‘Disco Drive’, and continued to play another because she said her first piece was not that good. Jesse did well with his Blues piece and Madelaine gave a good performance of ‘Ups and Downs’.

Representing the woodwind program was Freja, who gave a fine performance of ‘Minuet and Kumbayah’ on Saxophone. We have many talented singers at the school, and parents will remember the fine performances from all the singers including Tanjil who sang ‘Falling’, Charlie who sang ‘A Hard Days Night’ and Josh who continued the Beatles theme with ‘Here, There and Everywhere’. Well done to Tillly who sang the magical ‘Skylark’ beautifully.

Next up was the very cool duet ‘Basin Street Blues’ with Jack and Serey. Then we heard Hannah and Hillary sing a fine version of ‘Don’t Know Why’ and Nancy sang the moody ‘Autumn Leaves’. To close the voice program the school choir gave an excellent performance of the golden ‘Would I Lie’ and and a very catchy rendition of the motown classic ‘Dancing In the Street’. Well done guys, and congratulations to Liz our dynamic voice teacher who led the gang! Next up Jason played a medley of his favourite guitar numbers, including ‘Smoke On Water’ and ‘Aura Lee’.

At this point the room temperature was well above eleven, and it was time to crank up the volume to match the heat. Enter the FHS Guitar Ensemble, consisting of Hudson, Mori, Marco, Harry, Lochie, William, Branko, Josh, Tanjil, Kelly, Jack,  Mimi and Tom. This rather large and probably illegal collection of guitarists, led by the often feared Jon Delaney (guitar teacher on drums) and fronted by Richard on vocals, gave an amazing performance of ‘Sweet Child of Mine’. Well done to those who were brave enough to stand up and play solos and congratulations to the whole group. YOU GUYS ROCK!

A huge thank you to Rachel Meyers, Matt Hovell, Jon Delaney, Andy Williamson, Adam King, Liz Violi who worked so hard to get all the kids ready for the concert. Thanks also to the many parents, grand parents, babies, toddlers and friends who turned up to support the kids. Special thanks to Sue J in the office who does all the admin to make the program run without a bump. See you next term, at a slightly larger venue.

VCE Music Concert - 2 June 2009

On Tuesday 2nd June VCE music students from Fitzroy High performed together with students from Collingwood College. The evening was a great success and featured a range of soloists and bands. Students can obtain a video copy of the evening from Tom H. A big thank you to Christine D who invited us down to the college to perform. Next semester we will be having a similar evening with Collingwood students at FHS.

Student Reflections

I think that I went relatively well, but two of the three mistakes I made were avoidable.

Jon L

I think I went fairly well, the drums were really fun to play, the crash was a fantastic replacement and helped the performance a lot. The guitar work was fairly stock standard but the licks I did were also quite fun. It was incredibly nerve racking but I think our group pulled through quite well. It was all in all a really enjoyable experience and I learned a lot about performance whilst we were at Collingwood.

Jack F

T’was a great experience to perform in front of a large audience though it was rather nerve racking and as a result I made a few mistakes.

Murray W

Considering the standard at which we performed at Coburg our recent performance showed immense improvement. I was astounded with the amount of practice and dedication that was put into the weeks proceeding the gig but more work should have been put in earlier on. My vocals were varying in clarity and pitch and a few silly movements saw my voice not being picked by the mic.

Richard E

I think we all did a great job on the night of the performance, I made a  few mistakes but continued on. It was an enjoyable night.

Sammy C

Before our set I was so freaked out but when we started I thought that I played fairly well, I probably should have looked up into the crowd more though.

VCE Music Performance - April 2009

On Tuesday 24th March, three Fitzroy High School VCE music students performed at Coburg Senior High School for students from both schools to present the pieces they had been working on this term. Thanks to Monique Boggia for the invitation to perform at CSHS. We will be inviting students from CSHS to play at FHS in term 3.

VCE Music Performance - November 2008

Last Wednesday evening VCE Music students performed to friends and family in the library. Each student had the opportunity to perform their own compositions and these were all of a very high standard. The group also performed a diverse set of popular songs and jazz numbers. Congratulations to all students who performed and a big thank you to our drum teacher Greg Jansen who played drum kit for the group.
Here are some reflections on the performance made by the students:
The VCE performance night was very successful and left the audience (and ourselves) in a state of pure ecstasy, excitement and exhilaration. We played many different songs, containing aggressive jazz solos and heavenly singing that brought tears to everyone’s eyes. Overall I thought I played fairly well and enjoyed the night. I made a few little mistakes throughout but I’m sure no one noticed. It was also my first time singing in front of a large audience and I thought I performed quite well considering. Everyone enjoyed the night and if you missed it then you missed a truly fantastic experience.

Nick

On the night I think I did well at MC, in the first song my breathing was terrible but slowly picked up as ‘Satellite’ progressed. As I listened to Billy’s solo I got a second wind and rocked the last few choruses. In the second song ‘City Love’ there were a few mistakes but over all it was a good performance. Everyone slipped up a few times but picked it back up making ‘City Love’ a one to remember.

In my song ‘Walking in the snow’ I made a statement that made everyone have a
little laugh to themselves. Having my guitar in front of me made me feel a lot more at ease and relaxed. So I gave quite a good performance unlike the others. It was a good night, everyone played well and I had heaps of awesome fun that rocked on into the night. You know!

Thanks to everyone who came.

Stefan

Thank you to the twenty people who came (that is, attended) our performance. Keeping in mind the problems we faced with Stefan fighting the dengue in Jakarta, the performance came together quite well in the end. I’m not used to playing a performance to only a couple of people, all of whom I can make eye contact with, as I’m used to playing in dark rooms to hundreds of people, none of which I can see. You know how it is: An Epically Emotional Journey.

Billy

Given our limited, last minute practice, I think the performance went really well and was quite enjoyable for everyone. The wide range of genres kept it interesting and hopefully appealed to the whole audience in some way. The band did a great job on their respective instruments especially Greg, the drum teacher who filled in for us as we have no drummer in our band.

Jon

A mix of jungle grooves, late night dancing and a lot of lovin’. That was the VCE performance at its best. Ranging from the funk classic
Funkabalooza an original of Jono the bass man to SCORE! the smooth but smoky dark jazz club feelin’ original by Billy Paine. It was a night of
laughs, cries and good times complemented by Greg’s beats, Nick’s piano, Stef’s vocals and MC work and the guitar and I. It was almost too
enjoyable for the people that came.

News from the Music Department - August 2008

Last Tuesday Fitzroy High performed in the NMR School of Rock Competition in Ivanhoe where they were the headline act.

Three bands performed at the competition: 'Haze' a Fitzroy High original band; the VCE music band and a new Fitzroy High rock ensemble. After a long day of watching various primary and secondary schools perform, Haze (Pat D. Kane P. Nick DB. Stefan P. & Calum F.) played first, performing two original songs '2000 Miles' and 'Towered Over Me'.

Next was the VCE music band (Billy P. Stefan P. Jono N. Calum F. & Nick DB.) which performed a reggae version of the Coldplay  song 'Clocks' and a cover of the song 'Hysteria'. Finally the Fitzroy High rock ensemble (Richard E. James I. Nick DB. Calum F. Jono N. & Mori T) performed 'Knights of Cydonia'. All bands played really well impressing a very excited crowd of primary school students.
