Yarra District Girls Basketball

On Thursday 13th August Year 9 and 10 girls ventured down to Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. They were Eleanor D, Claire G, Jazzy G, Hannah H, Georgina K, Lucille K, Beatrice PZ, Alice Q, Izzy S and Olivia T. The girls trained over a number of lunchtimes together in preparation for the competition day and were very committed to playing. Fitzroy were grouped with Princes Hill ‘B’ team and the Melbourne Girls College ‘A’ Team. They would need to win both games to advance to the semi finals.

Game 1 - Fitzroy High - 45 defeated Princes Hill 2 - 15

This proved to be a pretty easy first game but the girls quickly showed that their defensive organisation was going to prove hard to beat. Georgina K led the way in scoring with over 15 points, and all other players contributed strongly in all facets of this game.

Game 2 - Fitzroy High - 18 defeated MGC - 17

This was a thrilling match with the girls only going ahead in the last minute of the game. The teams were locked at 8-8 at half time with Fitzroy missing some shots close to the basket during the first half. Jazzy came off the bench to hit some very important free throws and make some fantastic defensive stops in the second half, before Izzy, Alice, Georgina and Eleanor combined for the game winning fast break.

Semi Final - Fitzroy High - 27 defeated Elwood College -18

This match again was very close in the first half with Fitzroy just behind at half time with a two point deficit. The girls vowed to stick to their strength at half time of running the ball quickly down the court and looking for every fast break opportunity. Izzy S and Olivia T were particularly good at this and Eleanor, Georgina and Alice ensured that Elwood players didn’t get second shots to allow Fitzroy to be comfortable winners in the end.

Final - Fitzroy High - 11 defeated Mac Robertson’s Girls High School - 8

The girls deserved to be in the final through their hard work and great play and it had been a team effort all day to reach this stage. The girls began well with their defence, a full court press allowing the girls to get some easy lay-ups. The MacRob girls started to settle and their zone defence was starting to become particularly difficult to breakdown. At half time, the scores were 7 - 6 with Fitzroy with their noses in front.  Eleanor scored two points, Izzy scored two points and Georgina scored three points, hitting an important free throw just before half time.

The second half was very tense, with both defences dominating. MacRob were to be in front for most of the second half with two foul shots being made to allow them to lead by one.  Then a crucial score from Eleanor and then the game winning fast break with Alice on the end put the Fitzroy girls in the lead. They were to hold on over the next minute or so protecting the three point lead and finishing Yarra District Champions.

The team progresses to the Northern Zone Championships where they will play the other three best schools in the zone for a shot at the State Finals. The competition is set down for Tuesday 27th October at Coburg Basketball Stadium. We wish the girls the best of luck in this competition next term and congratulate them on their performance in this competition.

District Athletics

On Tuesday 5th May 60 students from all year levels made their way to the Meadowglen Athletics Track to compete against other schools in the district in both track and field athletic events. Students came ready to give their all, and show them that we may be a small school, but we are big in many ways.

The students were on their best behaviour the whole day, which made it all the more enjoyable for everyone involved. When they were competing they never gave up and when on the sidelines they encouraged and supported one another with tremendous spirit until the very end.

Some of the highlights of the day were Luke S getting the furthest distance of 14.15m in shot put and Tilly S digging deep to come first in all of her events (100m, 200m, and 400m) GO TILLY!  Most importantly all students had a go and enjoyed being a part of it all, whether first or last everyone achieved success just by being there. They represented themselves and the school in a manner which exemplified the Fitzroy High School spirit.

Well done to all competitors we are extremely proud of all of you. Good luck to those of you who have made it through to zones we look forward to cheering you on.

Senior Basketball Report

Friday 22nd May saw the senior boy’s and girl’s basketball teams head to MSAC for the round robin competition. The boys played six games (one against each team) and the girls were split into two pools where they played two pool matches and a final.

Girls Report

The girls started off the day with a great win against Princes Hill winning 31-6. Georgina and Sophie were the top scorers in that game. Their second pool match was against a much tougher outfit in Melbourne Girls College. Unfortunately they went down 15-56. With a   1-1 tally that put them into the B final or 3rd vs. 4th where they played Uni High. In what was a very close game that went right down to the wire they eventuated the victors winning 29-28 which was a great effort.

With only a small number of keen year 11 and 12 girls the team was stocked up with year 10’s. It would be great to see more enthusiasm from the senior girls and I thank the three that put their hands up to play and represent the school. Great work girls!

The team: Emely A, Eleanor D, Brooke J, Georgina K, Tian N and Sophie O.

Boys Report

The senior boys event was a round robin where they played each team once and then the top two played off in the final. The boys had a strong team and had performed well in the past so were confident of going well.

The first game was against Debney Park. In a mad rush, with shorts and socks flying everywhere to get on the court in time, the boys put together a solid performance winning 34-9. Leading scorers were Liam 10 and Nick 9.

The second game was against the highly fancied Melbourne High team. It was a close tussle for the first half and with 5 seconds to go scores were tied at 9 apiece. This set the scene for one of the truly glorious moments in FHS sporting history - as the clock wound down and with us in possession deep in the defensive half, Liam managed to set sail with a three quarter court bomb that curved from right to left and fell in the hole!!! This put us up 12-9 at the half time break. With the adrenalin pumping the boys came out very focused for the second half and quickly worked on a good lead, with Nick and Toby doing the damage, to get us out to a 7 point lead. MHS went man on man for a while which worked in our favour as the boys maintained possession and continued to build the lead. We eventually ran out easy victors winning 26-15. Toby led all scorers with 10 and Liam had 7.

Onto the third game in a row against Glen Eira. It ended up a close match, they had one dominant player and we were able to get some time into the subs legs, and with 30 secs to go the scoreboard read 29-27 our way. The boys were able to soak up the remaining seconds to hold onto a win only to find out shortly that the scoreboard was incorrect and Glen Eira had won by 1 point. Lesson to be learnt - never let Glen Eira students do the scoring with no assistance. Again Toby 14 and Liam 6 led the scoring.

After a shock loss and enjoying a break with the bye, the boys came up against the other team to beat in Princes Hill. This was a fantastic game played in really good spirits. It was close throughout the match although FHS managed to lead for most of it. Eventually we came up with a 23-20 win and were looking good to make the final. Michael got it together to lead FHS scorers in this game with 6.

Our fifth game we played Elwood who had gone down to MHS and PHSC by fairly big margins. This allowed us to rest some of the bigger names (including Michael who had gone down with pretty severe cramping). A highly entertaining offensive match ensued with Toby banging down 5 from 5 three pointers to kick off the match. However, defensively FHS had no game at all and this allowed Elwood to stay in the match, at halftime we held a slender 3 point margin. After half time the boys continued to play with little ‘D’ and Elwood managed to grab the lead. Then the shock of loss entered the boys’ minds and our offensive game went off and we started missing. By this time Elwood had started to pull away and got out to a 7 point lead. The unimaginable was about to happen - Elwood were going to win. The boys pulled out all stops in the closing minutes but were unable to get the lead back and ended up going down 44-45. The chance of finals was now very slim as it was going to go down to percentage and a close game to Elwood meant we were well behind. Toby starred in the match and ended up with 23 points.

The last round robin match we played Uni High and the boys were feeling fairly devastated (as was the coach). They put in a great performance to smash UHS 53-26 with some high scores from Liam 18, Michael 13 and Eamon 12. However, as it turned out we had missed out on the final which was to be played between Princes Hill and Melbourne High (the two teams we beat!!!).

With a bit of luck the boys would’ve made the finals but with such a poor showing against Elwood we paid the price. A great effort that could’ve been so much more.

The team: Jake C, Eamon F, Toby HB, Michael K, Nick M, Dylan O, Liam O and Dom PP.

Yarra Jets Soccer Report

In 2008 a group of year 7 and 8 girls got together and formed an under 15 girl’s soccer team, whom are now being coached by our former sports teacher Chris Millard.

In the first year of forming the team we trained and got our skills and fitness up for 2009 when we would become an official team. Over the course of the year people joined and people quit, by the time it came to 2009 we had a solid team of 15 players.

Most of the team are Fitzroy High students but there are some players from Northcote High, Melbourne Girls and Ivanhoe Grammar. In 2008 we had a practise match against another Clifton Hill team the scores being 4-2 their way. We continued to train and joined the Yarra Jets club.

Earlier this year we had another practise match against Alphington. They thrashed us 6-0!!!! The week after that game the proper season started and we played our first match against Croydon City Arrows with the outcome being 1-1, which was pretty good for our first game of the season. Zoe M got the goal for our team! We had a strong defence and a fast attack.

In the next match of the season we played Essendon Royals and we won 7-1! Zoe M scored 2 goals in the first 10 minutes of the match!! It was a great way to start the game for us. Later in the first half Tilly S scored a goal! Erin - from Northcote - scored 3 goals all up and Lucille K scored one goal! Everyone played fantastically - Alex D, Julie D, Jemima H, Christina R, Kara S, Mia T, Olivia T, Victoria T, Anna Z, Caitlin Z and Sophia.

We are now training hard twice a week for our weekend games. Hopefully we will get into the finals and end our season well!!!!!!!!!

Senior Footy Report

Last Thursday the first ever FHS senior footy team had a kick at the district round robin. It was a great day and the boys performed really well to finish 3rd, with 2 wins and a loss.

Melbourne High went on to win the day after beating us in the first game. At half time we’d managed to stick with them and were only 1 goal down which was a great effort. I had a chat with the MHS coach and he said they have 700 senior boys to choose a team from, we have about 70 so you can see what an effort it was to get as close as we did.

The highlight of the day included Nathan C snagging the first 5 goals of our game versus Uni High and then breaking his hand in two places and wrist and heading off to the Royal Children’s.

Max O (captain) and Nick M (vice captain) were the leaders of the team and did a great job. Toby H-B, Adam B and Dylan O were our best players for the day: Adam spending most of his time across half back and having a ‘never say die attitude’ to every contest he was involved in; Toby playing on ball and gathering a lot of possessions and using the ball well, especially after copping a bake from the coach at half time of the last game and Dylan being very solid across half back and at times on the ball and always putting his body on the line finishing the day with slight concussion.

March 2009

Intermediate Tennis

The Fitzroy team played at Fawkner Park on the 3rd March 2009. In their first game we were up against Uni High. Kristian N and Tom W were our first pair and after being up 4-1, eventually lost in a tiebreak (7-5) so were slightly unlucky. Kristian was on fire early, kicking off the game with a big ace, but they couldn’t carry that form throughout the game.

The second pair of Johnny C and John P had to win their game 6-4 or better for us to go through to the next round. After being down 3-1, they fought back to win 6-4 and put us into the second round. Johnny started off poorly on serve with a raft of double faults but his second to service games were won to love in a dominant performance. Our second game put us up against Princes Hill who were far too good for us. The first pair lost 6-1 and the second pair went down 6-2. Overall it was a good effort by the boys.

Intermediate Yarra District Cricket Competition

A fine and warm day greeted the Year 9 and 10 cricketers down at Fawkner Park, in what we expected to be a hotly contested cricket competition. Fitzroy was drawn in the group with Brunswick Secondary and Princes Hill and would play them in two, 10 over a side games. This will be the new format once 20/20 is considered too mundane.

In the first match, Fitzroy played Brunswick and after Murray W(skipper for the day) won the toss, the boys elected to field. This may have put Fitzroy a little on the back foot and playing on a very small ground was under pressure from the outset. Murray W ended his first over by picking up the opener but this did little to stem the flow. Paddy D bowled well and also picked up a wicket but Brunswick was dominant, finishing on 126 after their 10 overs.

The chase started disastrously in the first over losing Conor B run out with some kamikaze calling. Then the fight back began. Paddy D and Murray W put together a partnership of 54 from the next 4 overs to give Fitzroy a sniff of victory. Paddy lost his wicket on 24, after hitting 6 consecutive fours and this seemed to stop the momentum a little. Murray W retired on 31, so it was left to Saen F and Gabe N to continue the scoring. In what was always going to be a difficult run chase, Fitzroy fell short, finishing on a respectable 82 off their 10 overs.

The team could take a lot out of this game from their batting, and were determined to make up for the mistakes in the field including dropped catches and bowling too short.

The next match was against Princes Hill and this time it would be Fitzroy who would bat first. The order was changed a little to make sure everyone had a bat over the day, so it was Saen F and Conor B who would open up.  Conor batted determinedly in this innings and was the mainstay, registering 19 runs. Adam A, Lochie L and Brett all quickly departed, so it was left to Rob A to guide the innings. He finished on 14 runs, which was a very good effort. Declan H hit a nice four, but couldn’t get on strike in the last over, as the batsmen failed to get bat on ball. Fitzroy’s score after 10 overs was 52 which proved to be not nearly enough.

Murray W picked up two wickets in his spell which was fantastic, but needed more support from the rest of the bowlers. Princes Hill batted very well and ended up convincing winners.

I’d like to thank all the team members – Adam A, Rob A, Conor B, Paddy D, Saen F, Declan H, Lochie L, Gabe N, Brett S, Dieter T and Murray W for their enthusiasm and their willingness to train. I’d also like to thank Edinburgh Cricket Club and Stan White for allowing us to train and use their nets on Wednesday nights. The boys and I certainly appreciate the support.
